Raleigh Surprise Proposal Photography

Avéline Weddings photographs and films surprise proposals across Raleigh–Durham, NC, including Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and Wake Forest. You plan the moment; we hide nearby, catch the question and the reaction as it happens, then take portraits of the two of you right after, while you are still glowing.

Why hire a proposal photographer?

The proposal lasts about thirty seconds, and the one person who would normally take the photo is the one down on one knee. A friend with a phone usually gets the back of a head, or gives the surprise away. A hidden photographer gets the walk up, the question, the reaction and the ring, from the right angle and in the right light, and nobody has to tell anyone to stand somewhere.

How a surprise proposal shoot works

  1. Pick the spot. Tell us where you are thinking of; we help you choose the exact place to stand and the time for the best light.
  2. Send us a photo of you both and what you plan to wear, so we know who to watch for.
  3. Share your live location on the day. We arrive early, find our hiding place and watch you walk in.
  4. Ask. We capture it all, then come out for portraits of the two of you and the ring.

Best places to propose in Raleigh

  • JC Raulston ArboretumA free garden at NC State with something in bloom nearly every month.
  • Dorothea Dix ParkThe big hill with the skyline behind it, and the sunflower field in summer.
  • North Carolina Museum of Art ParkOpen lawns, sculpture and trails with long sunset light.
  • Raleigh Rose GardenA small, quiet rose garden by the Little Theatre, at its best in May.
  • Sarah P. Duke Gardens (Durham)Terraces, a pergola and a pond; one of the most popular proposal spots in the Triangle.
  • Yates Mill County ParkA restored mill and pond, with soft light and few people in the evening.
  • Pullen ParkA lakeside park near downtown with old trees and a classic carousel.
  • Downtown Raleigh rooftopsA rooftop at sunset for a city proposal with dinner below.

What should I wear for the proposal?

Something you feel good in that matches the place: a button-down or a light jacket and a dress or nice top work almost everywhere. Solid colors photograph better than busy prints. If your partner does not know, find a reason for a nicer evening out, like a dinner reservation, so dressing up does not give it away.
